Customer Reviews
If you've got an old house, or at least one with plaster walls you may need these spacers. If the receptacle box is too low, so switches and sockets don't line up with the cover plate, these spacers go between the switch or receptacle and the box to let it align with the surface of the wall. They are packaged in a set of three, each of which has 10 1/8" nesting spacers. You'll need a stack at the top and bottom of a given receptacle (which is hopefully helpful is deciding how many you need). These things are easier to use and way more elegant than a stack of washers from Ace hardware and such. Highly recommended for the older house.
These are handy not only in older homes, as another reviewer mentioned, but also in newer construction where the drywall installers weren't very careful cutting the holes for the outlet boxes. If the hole is too large or out of position, the metal tabs on the receptacle body won't contact the drywall, and without any additional support the receptacle will simply move behind the drywall when you crank it down. With these spacers, you can fold multiple pieces together to create whatever thickness you need. The width of the screw notch is sized just right so that you can snap it over the threads and it won't fall off while you're tightening. My previous method was using stacks of homemade cardboard shims and I was glad to find something different.
Note: I did not purchase these through Amazon, but rather at a hardware store where I got a bag of (25) 4-inch segments for around $6. This is apparently a different quantity/size than what Amazon offers, but the functionality is the same.
