Customer Reviews
I searched for years to find this tool tote, and it is perfect. There are many similar square totes on the market, some of which I've even owned, but the CLC 1527 is far and away the best designed and constructed I've come across. I was able to fit all the tools from a 12"x12" Husky tote, and then some, into this 8"x8" tote, and they're easier to find, too!
Like most 8" square tool totes, the center is divided into 3 roughly equal rectangular sections. Unlike most competitors, though, the upright handle sections rise from these center dividers, rather than the outer walls. This makes the two deep outboard sections much more accessible. CLC compliments this feature by further dividing the outboard sections and adding pockets and elastic straps to the outside of the upright handle straps. All together, these design elements keep the tools in these sections vertical, accessible, and easy to find. You can see in my pictures that my screwdrivers all stay handle-up, easy to identify, and easy to grab. The handle straps keep my pliers and wire strippers a little higher than the screwdrivers and equally easy to find and grab. Despite the added dividers, the outboard compartments easily hold all but the largest multimeters.
The center compartment is perfect for longer-handled tools or power tools. I keep my hammer, combination square, and 18V cordless drill in the center compartment. CLC further polishes the design with an impressive assortment of exterior pockets. These include a mix of "flush" and "bloused" pockets. The flush pockets are flat, like the back pocket on a pair of jeans, and perfect for pencils and miniature screwdrivers; the bloused pockets are like the side pockets on a pair of cargo pants, come in multiple heights, and accommodate fatter tools like my utility knife, flashlight, and fold-out hex keys. There is one wide zippered pocket. I could do without the zipper, but I like having one wide pocket, and the zipper's not really a hindrance; I keep my 15 piece drill-bit case in there. There is also a tape-measure loop, cell phone pocket, and skinny sleeves which are probably intended for pencils, but I keep my punches and nail-sets in there. It would be nice if the tape-measure loop was steel instead of webbing, but I suppose the webbing is more versatile.
I've been using the tote for about 3 months, and it's holding up very well. I'm not a pro, but I have some serious remodeling projects going on both at my house and my fiance's house, so it's getting plenty of use, including lots of banging around in my car's trunk.
I also looked at CLC's totes with small-parts boxes, but I prefer to carry that stuff in bulk, in cinch bags, so I went with this model. I briefly owned a Craftsman tote of very similar design, but as soon as I got it home I realized the outer pockets weren't bloused, and so couldn't fit most of my tools in it. I returned that one to Sears and went back to searching until I found this one. All-in-all, I'm as pleased as I could be with this product.
I have spent over 30 years looking for the perfect tool "box", and this is as close it can come. I have room for my primary tools and any for a specific job plus storage for small parts, all are easily available without digging through a pile. My work just got a lot less complicated when trying to find a specific tool.
